James Magnussen
James Magnussen (born 11 April 1991) is a swimmer from Australia. He is the current 100 metres freestyle men's world champion.
Career
Magnussen finished 3rd in the 100m Freestyle at the Telstra 2010 Australian Swimming Championships to qualify for the national team.
2010 Pan Pacs & Commonwealth Games
In 2010, Magnussen was part of the 4×100m freestyle relay team at the Commonwealth Games collecting gold and setting a games record. At the Pan Pacs he placed 10th in the 100m freestyle as well as anchoring the relay team to silver behind team USA.
In 2011, he took gold in the 100m freestyle at the Telstra 2011 Australian Swimming Championships (World Championship Trials) in a time of 48.29 which became the world leading time. He followed up winning the 100 & 200 freestyle at he Australian Short course championships 2 months later.
2011 World championships
During the 2011 World Aquatics Championships, Magnussen was the starter for the Australian relay team in the 4×100 metre freestyle relay. His time of 47.49 eclipsed Pieter van den Hoogenband's (pre-polyurethane suit) former world record, and is the fastest swim ever over that distance by a swimmer not wearing the now-banned suit. The lead he gained over Michael Phelps and Alain Bernard was enough for the Australian team to hold off the favourites USA and France and win gold. Four days later he became the first Australian man to win the 100 metres freestyle at a World Championships, with a time of 47.63 seconds.[1] On the final night, he anchored the 4x100m medley relay team to silver.
